Architectural Stone · Travertine vs Porcelain Paving

Travertine vs porcelain paving: which to specify?

Both are go-to choices for UK patios, terraces and pool surrounds — and a question we field constantly from merchants and landscapers. Here is how natural travertine and outdoor porcelain compare on look, slip, frost, maintenance and cost, and when each is the right call. Karpat supplies both, so this is a straight comparison rather than a pitch for one.

Choose travertine when…

The client wants genuine natural stone — the depth, warmth and subtle variation porcelain can only print. Travertine suits Mediterranean and country gardens, pool surrounds (tumbled, with matching bullnose copings), and premium residential terraces where authenticity matters. It is porous, so plan for sealing, and specify a frost-resistant grade for UK weather.

Choose porcelain when…

Low maintenance and consistency win — rental properties, commercial landscaping, or any scheme that wants a seamless indoor-to-outdoor floor in the same décor. Outdoor porcelain is frost-proof, stain-resistant and needs no sealing, with engineered R11 slip resistance and dead-flat colour matching batch to batch. The trade-off is that it is a printed surface, not real stone.

Common questions

Travertine vs porcelain — quick answers.

Which is cheaper, travertine or porcelain paving?

They are broadly comparable at trade level. Standard-format travertine and mid-range porcelain land close on price; very large-format or premium porcelain décors can sit higher. We quote both so you can compare on the actual spec and quantity.

Which is more slip-resistant when wet?

Outdoor porcelain has engineered, consistent slip resistance (R11 ranges). Tumbled or brushed travertine also performs well, but the value depends on the finish — we supply slip data for both.

Which needs less maintenance?

Porcelain — it is stain-resistant and never needs sealing. Travertine is porous and should be sealed on installation and re-sealed periodically, which is part of its natural-stone character.
