Architectural Stone · Walling

Sandstone walling stone supplier to the UK trade.

Karpat supplies buff sandstone walling blocks to UK stone merchants and builders' merchants — coursed walling in the sizes the trade actually lays, produced to order and shipped by the container. Split face walling stone and tumbled walling stone, undyed or finished, in the buff and brown tones that read as weathered Yorkshire. We are the material supplier: we buy direct from the producer, disclose the origin and the transit, and land the container duty-paid.

Buff sandstone walling blocks, split face with sawn beds and ends

140mm coursed walling

140mm coursed walling on a 100mm bed, in random lengths of roughly 350–450mm, is the UK building-stone standard — the course height a bricklayer works to and the bed depth a cavity wall needs. It is worth being precise about this, because most sandstone exported for walling is 40–80mm, which is cladding pinned to a backing rather than stone bedded in mortar. We quote 100mm on the bed as a bed, not as a nominal figure, and we ask the producer to prove it on the loading calculation before we buy.

Tumbled buff sandstone walling blocks with softened arrises

Format 02

Split face, tumbled, and Victorian walling stone

The face is naturally split, so every block carries its own fracture rather than a machined pattern. Tumbling knocks the arrises back and gives the reclaimed, softened edge that reads as Victorian walling stone once it is laid and pointed. Both beds are sawn — a course will not sit true on one flat face — and the ends can be sawn or left as split, depending on how tight you want the perpends. We supply undyed for merchants who dye, tumble and age in their own yard, or finished where you would rather buy it ready.

Container economics

Walling is sold by the m², and bought by the tonne.

A wall face of 140mm coursed walling on a 100mm bed weighs roughly 240 kg per m². At a 26 tonne payload that is about 108 m² of wall face geometrically, and 90–100 m² once crating and breakage are allowed for. A 20ft container is the right box: the load is weight-limited long before it is volume-limited, so a 40ft carries barely more payload and buys nothing.

This matters when you compare quotations. A price per m² is a price per tonne wearing a disguise, and it moves with the bed depth. If a producer offers 200 m² in a container they have quietly reverted to thin cladding; if they offer 70, they are pricing a deeper block than the one you specified. We check the arithmetic on every offer before it reaches you.

What we supply — and what we don't

Material to spec, documented.

  • We supply — sandstone walling produced to your course height, bed depth, length range, face and finish, with samples approved before the order is placed.
  • We document — we obtain the producer's test data for the material offered: BS EN 771-6 (natural stone masonry units), BS EN 12371 freeze-thaw and BS EN 13755 water absorption, with a Declaration of Performance. Frost durability is the figure that matters in a UK wall, and we ask for it before quoting rather than after.
  • We don't — hold stock, design the wall, or carry out the work. Supply is order-based, arranged with the producer once an order is placed.

Natural stone carries 0% import duty into the UK from any origin, so there is no duty line and no origin certificate to chase. We deliver duty-paid in GBP, or supply FOB/CFR for buyers running their own forwarders.

How we source

Origin follows the product.

Sandstone is not produced in Turkey at the scale this product needs, so our walling comes from Rajasthan — the buff and brown sandstones the UK trade already knows, loading at Mundra. We tell you the origin and the transit up front. Send the course height, bed depth, length range, face, finish and quantity; we approach the producers on your behalf, check their loading arithmetic against the geometry, and come back with comparative offers and a delivered-UK estimate.
